Education

After graduating from Marion High School in Marion, Illinois, as an Illinois State Scholar, I attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, receiving a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Agriculture and Journalism, and a minor in History.  During my undergraduate studies, I was inducted into Alpha Zeta and the Golden Key National Honor Society, both academic honors organizations.

I attended law school at Southern Illinois University School of Law, graduating in 1989 with a Juris Doctorate.

Legal

I am licensed to practice law in Illinois and Missouri, in addition to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.  

I have held the positions of Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois, Assistant State’s
Attorney in Williamson County, and Assistant Appellate Prosecutor.  While practicing during this time, I was a returning guest lecturer at Shawnee College Marriage and Family class, guest lecturer at Southern Illinois University School of Law Family Law class, and a regular teacher at the pro se divorce class at the Carbondale Women’s Center.

Additionally, I held the position of Liability Representative at State Farm Insurance, handling Commercial and Personal lines, as well as Bond Claims for the entire State of Illinois.

I am the founder and owner of Hafford Elder Law Planning, a personalized law firm focusing on Elder Law Estate Planning, Medicaid Planning, Probate, Guardianships, Adoptions, Divorces, Legal Separations, Child Support and Paternity actions.  I also handle pro bono legal work for Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation.

I am a member of Elder Counsel, the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), Illinois NAELA, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Williamson County Bar Association.

Personal

I am married to my husband, John, and we have one son, in addition to my two step-daughters. Our family lives outside of Marion.   I am on the Board of Directors of Southern Illinois Treasure Tours, and a past sponsor of my son’s recreational soccer team.


Hafford Elder Law Planning serves clients throughout Southern Illinois, including: Franklin, Gallatin, Hardin, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Perry, Pope, Saline, Union and Williamson counties.
